In the spotlight: Het Scheepvaartmuseum, full of love for water sports

In the run-up to Dutch Water Week, we are putting a number of stakeholders in the spotlight. Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam is also participating in the Dutch Water Week. Marleen Smit, Head of Marketing & Communication, explains why this is actually a very logical choice. “We find each other in the love of water sports.”

What is there to do at Het Scheepvaartmuseum during the Dutch Water Week?
“Children can participate in Optimist on Tour at our museum on Thursday, May 26 and Friday, May 27. And we at our museum also host the grand Dutch team presentation. In addition, there will be all kinds of cool water sports demonstrations on the Marine Park located right next to the museum. So if you’re visiting our museum, you can see some of that too. It’s great fun to combine the two in one day out.”

Why are Dutch Water Week and Het Scheepvaartmuseum a good match?
“We are a hospitable museum with vibrant activities in and outside the museum. Participating in this wonderful public week fits in very well with that. The Dutch Water Sports Association and our museum also have a lot in common. The Future is Water is the motto of the Watersports Association and our motto is Water connects worlds. This, of course, fits together very well. We find each other in the love of water sports and the desire to connect new generations. We also share a great commitment to the theme of sustainability.”

What do we not yet know about Het Scheepvaartmuseum but should know?
“We have a very nice permanent exhibition with yacht models through the ages, which also features modern boats like the Volvo Ocean Racer ABNAMRO1, winner of the race in 2006. The exhibition gives a nice picture of pleasure boating and of all the innovations through the ages. In other words, at Het Scheepvaartmuseum it’s always Sail.”

Do you have any tips for visitors and what are you really looking forward to yourself?
“If you come to our museum, be sure to get on board  of the replica of the VOC ship Amsterdam, which is moored at the pier. Personally, I’m looking forward to the demonstrations on the Marine site, with in particular the wakeboarding competition on Saturday.”
