Water sports athletes hope that the new water sports event, Dutch Water Week, can contribute to a solution for the water plant problem in our province. In the spring and summer, water sports enthusiasts have a lot of trouble with the growing water plants.

Several agencies have been looking for a structural solution for a long time. ‘Gastvrije Randmeren’ hopes that this year agreements will be made on a national level. With the support of the provinces of Flevoland, North Holland, Utrecht and Gelderland, an administrative lobby was started last year in the direction of the Lower House. In recent years, mowing was started in June, but according to water sports athletes that is not enough for optimal sailing. “I hope that serious attention will now be paid to solving the water plant problem,” says Marco Boone of windsurfing club Almere Centraal.

The Dutch Water Week is a new event and will be held in Flevoland from May 27 to June 5. During that week, top and amateur athletes should be able to enjoy a week of water sports in Flevoland.

Those directly involved are positive about the ambitious plans of the Watersport Association. “The fact that such a beautiful event is held just in your backyard will definitely inspire people to also go windsurfing or eventually go foiling,” says Boone.

Olympic sailor and ambassador of the event Marit Bouwmeester knows the problem of the water plants, but she also sees enough places around Flevoland where it’s possible to sail. She hopes that the Dutch Water Week will be a success. “Watersports are just fantastic and for everyone at their own level,” says Bouwmeester.
